Durand Jones & The Indications have returned with their third studio album, which features modern soul. Private Space will be released on July 30 by Dead Oceans in collaboration with Colemine Records.
The band’s latest lean toward synthy modern soul and disco beats is evident in the lead single “Witchoo.” Durand Jones’ vocals coupled with drummer Aaron Frazer’s falsetto help the five-piece which also includes Blake Rhein on guitar, Steve Okonski on keys, and Mike Montgomery on bass mix classic sounds with a modern twist.
Though Private Space is a deliberate departure from The Indications’ roots in 1960s funk and soul, the album’s exploratory vibe is true to the band’s origins and changing tastes.
The group’s latest album is their most uptempo yet, drawing influence from Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers, Raphael Saadiq, and others. The 10-track album, which features an eight-piece string section and vibraphonist Joel Ross, evokes a glittering disco ball while also serving as a meditation on the solitude and loss of 2020.
Durand Jones & The Indications will take Private Space on the road this fall, with an 11-date trek launching on September 7 at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club. They’ll be in Pennsylvania, New York, Chicago, Minnesota, and California during September. On September 24, at Ohana Fest in Dana Point, Calif., the current dates will come to an end.
