The Weeknd is working on a new HBO series with Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria. According to Deadline, the musician, better known as Abel Tesfaye, will star in, co-write, and executive-produce the show.
The show will revolve around a female pop artist who has a relationship with “an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.” The series was co-created by Levinson and the Weeknd, as well as Reza Fahim, the Weeknd’s producing partner. The project’s co-writer and showrunner will be Joseph Epstein.
The Weeknd previously starred in Adam Sandler’s 2019 film Uncut Gems and voiced characters in episodes of American Dad and Robot Chicken, two of his favourite animated television shows. He revealed Rolling Stone last year that he was interested in writing for movies and that he was working on a secret screenplay.
The Weeknd’s most recent album, After Hours, was released in March of last year. He performed his track “Save Your Tears” at a number of award ceremonies recently, including the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where he was accompanied by Ariana Grande. Planet Her, Doja Cat’s third studio album, features him as well.
