Producer Noah “40” Shebib came to Instagram to explain why R. Kelly was credited as a co-writer on Drake’s latest album, Certified Lover Boy’s song “TSU.”
Shebib, one of the album’s producers, responded to an Instagram post that included a snapshot of an Independent headline that read, “Certified Lover Boy: Drake album credits R. Kelly as co-lyricist.” Kelly does not appear on “TSU,” according to the producer.
Several tracks on Drake’s record, including the Beatles’ “Michelle,” the Notorious B.I.G., Right Said Fred, and Kelly, have song writing credits for sampling and interpolation.
According to WhoSampled, Kelly’s 1998 song “Half on a Baby” uses the same symphonic start as “TSU.” Kelly, Drake, the single’s producers (Harley Arsenault, Noel Cadastre, OC Ron G), Christopher Cross, Timbaland, and Justin Timberlake are all credited as songwriters on the track because of the sample; N’Sync’s rendition of Cross’ “Sailing” is also sampled.
