Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Mariposa Segarra will release her debut album in five years in February.
The album, named “Life on Earth,” will be unleashed on Nonesuch Records, marking Segarra’s first major-label release after years with ATO Records.
“Life on Earth,” Segarra’s eighth studio album, was recorded during the pandemic and was produced by Brad Cook. Several of the songs were first performed solo acoustic and stripped-down during Segarra’s previous gigs at Brooklyn’s Jalopy Theatre.
However, the album’s lead song, “Rhododendron,” alluded to a full-band, more fleshed-out arrangement, which we also heard on Segarra’s previous album, “The Navigator,” released in 2017. Segarra recites a series of impressionistic visuals in the song, which culminates in a cathartic chorus: “Don’t turn your back on the mainland!”
Segarra appears in the video wearing a variety of glammed-up outfits, including a bodysuit performance in front of a throng of plants.
Life on Earth will be released on February 18th, followed by a U.S. tour the following month.
