During Jimmy Fallon’s forthcoming music and comedy variety game program That’s My Jam, which premieres Jan. 3 on NBC, Chance the Rapper gave Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” a country-rock spin.
Chance pushes a lever in the show’s promo trailer, which lands on the “Musical Genre Challenge,” which pairs a track with a genre other than its original form and demands the contestant to sing it. The matchup eventually settled on Nelly’s smash rap song and the “Country Rock” genre.
Chance was eager to take on the challenge. The backing band kept a laid-back vibe going, and Chance’s cadence matched the country-tinged swing as he drawled out the song’s words to the cheers and participation of the audience. “Country, it works,” Josh Groban, who co-starred with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alessia Cara in the episode, remarked after Chance’s performance.
While the track and genre combo seemed to be chosen at random, it was a good fit for a Nelly track. Heartland, Nelly’s most recent album, is a country-influenced effort that features Kane Brown, Florida Georgia Line, and Darius Rucker, among others.
Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson also appeared in a preview for That’s My Jam the previous month. Each episode will feature two celebrity teams competing for a charity of their choice in a combination of music, dance, and trivia-style games.
