Balraj Singh Samrai, a co-founder of Swing Ting, and Farah Ahmad Khan collaborated on ‘Planet-People-Power,’ an 11-minute composition that combines music production, natural field samples, interviews, poetry, and more.
It addresses subjects such as Black, Indigenous, and South Asian diaspora experiences of environmental inequity, as well as ecological linkages between Manchester and the Global South, in response to climate change and in favour of Climate Justice.
Manchester Museum & Season for Change commissioned the project.
Jamaican musicians and vocalists Gavsborg and Shanique Marie of Equiknoxx, as well as Pandit G of the Asian Dub Foundation, join Balraj Singh Samrai and Farah Ahmad Khan in bringing emotionally charged viewpoints to the storytelling work.
It also includes excerpts from interviews with climate activist Pooja Kishinani, Alexandra P. Alberda, Curator of Indigenous Perspectives, and Manchester-based writer, performance artist, and producer Keisha Thompson, as well as the voices of children conveying the urgency of taking action against climate change.
