For Spotify Singles, Omar Apollo Performs a Cover of “California Dreamin”

As part of his participation into Spotify’s Singles series, where artists provide a new version of one of their tracks along with a cover of another artist, Omar Apollo put a new spin on the classic “California Dreamin’.”

The Mexican-American vocalist used a slightly different way to achieve the same moodiness and mysticism as the Mamas & the Papas’ original: the sparse arrangement twists his echoing voice around strumming acoustic guitar and a hissing organ. Apollo also included a downtempo version of his track “Go Away” on the album.

Last month, Apollo debuted “Go Away,” his first new music since releasing his EP Apolonio in 2020. With the collaboration of Carter Lang and Chromeo, Apollo produced “Go Away.”

On July 27th, the artist will perform a one-off event in Chicago, followed by appearances at Lollapalooza (July 30th) and Bonnaroo (September 3rd). Apollo will be joined by Niko Rubio, Deb Never, Maye, and Sofia Valdes on various dates throughout the North American tour, which begins September 18th in Miami and ends November 10th in Boston.
