John Davis, the lead singer of Milli Vanilli, died of COVID at the age of 66.
The German team, led by Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus, exploited Davis’ voice on successful songs during the 1980s and 1990s, earning them a GRAMMY Award in 1990.
Milli Vanilli’s popular single “Girl You Know It’s True” gained critical acclaim and sold 11 million copies throughout the world, although it was solely composed of Davis’ voice. On the album, the real vocalist was listed as a supporting singer, with the duo receiving full credit.
Morvan and Pilatus received a GRAMMY Award for Best New Act in 1990, but had to return it once it was discovered that they were lip-syncing their songs. In 1989, the duo played in front of an audience of 80,000 people in Connecticut, where an audio malfunction revealed the duo’s false identity.
The infamous incident was found after the duo had already sold 30 million singles around the world, and they were hit with a slew of lawsuits after the news broke.
In the mid-eighties, John Davis joined the pair, moving from South Carolina to Munich to sing on Milli Vanilli’s hit songs. The singer died yesterday at the age of 66 from coronavirus-related illnesses, according to reports.
