According to Deadline, Janelle Monáe has been cast as jazz legend Josephine Baker in an upcoming A24 television series. The show, named De La Resistance, will focus on Baker’s career as a world-renowned jazz performer and as well as her duty as a spy for the Allies during World War II’s French resistance.
She has previously worked on programs such as Outlander, See, and Underground. Along with securing the main role, Monáe will produce the series through her Wondaland Pictures label. Monáe’s newest Met Gala ensemble was inspired by Josephine Baker for the gilded glamour-themed event; the musician chose to wear a close-fitting, beaded Ralph Lauren gown with a fitted hood.
Monáe’s latest studio album, Dirty Computer, was released in 2018. She has appeared in a variety of films and television programs, including Moonlight, Harriet, Hidden Figures, Antebellum, and more.
