Lady Aïda, who was known as “the first lady of techno” by many in the Dutch dance music industry, died at the age of 63.
According to a report by Eindhovens Dagblad, a local news agency headquartered in the Dutch city where Spaninks was raised, Lady Aïda, actual name Aïda Spaninks, died after a brief illness. 3voor12 also stated that she had breast cancer recently.
Spaninks was born in 1958, in the village of Diessen, near Eindhoven, and made her fame as a DJ at prominent Dutch festivals such as Pinkpop and Lowlands in the mid-to-late 1980s. She also hosted her own parties and performed as a DJ.
She continued to DJ well into her sixties, acquiring a sizable vinyl collection along the way and founded Rebelbass, a DJ school in Eindhoven, in 2009.
Spaninks was also a writer, with a monthly column published in Eindhovens Dagblad and her own Rebelbass blog on 3voor12.
Serge from a Dutch techno label and record store Clone wrote a song in honor of Spaninks.
