Mavis Staples has unveiled Carry Me Home, a new live music album recorded in Woodstock, New York in 2011 with Levon Helm of the Band. Anti- will release it on May 20.
Carry Me Home was one of Helm’s final recordings, made at his studio. Helm died in April 2012 at the age of 71, and the record captures the pair’s final performance together.
Last year, Staples performed a rousing duet with her idol Mahalia Jackson in Questlove’s Summer of Soul documentary, which focused on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. She and Jeff Tweedy collaborated on a fresh track titled “All in It Together” in 2020 to support Chicago senior citizens combating COVID-19.
