In a video posted on his Instagram account yesterday, Nile Rodgers expressed his enthusiasm for Liverpool’s canal system.
The three-time Grammy winner appeared to be wandering alone through the streets of Liverpool, which he identified on his Instagram video as The Beatles’ hometown, in the footage.
Initially, the Chic frontman stands there watching a large canal boat pass through one of the open lock gates. He then observes as the water level in a lock chamber changes, allowing the boat to pass through a second lock and into the canal system.
A lock chamber is used to keep the water. The flow of water is normally controlled by gates at each end of the lock chamber.
When a vessel is at a lower level, a gate is permitted to open, allowing water to enter the lock and fill it with water. Once the water level has reached the upper level, the vessel can resume its journey.
This is the very first time the artist has ever seen a canal in operation.
The volunteer in Nile’s video who was opening the canal and altering the water levels said the canal had been present since the 19th century and was designed in the late 18th century.
Under Nile’s post, others have left him encouraging remarks.
