T Bone Burnett and US music producer is creating a new physical audio composition named ‘Iconic Originals.’
The ultra-high-fidelity composition, which is supposed to be a cross between vinyl and CD, is comprised of aluminum and lacquer. Burnett called it “the pinnacle of recorded sound” in a statement.
Burnett has brought Bob Dylan to re-record some of his tracks to test the new format. (Burnett was formerly a member of Dylan’s band.) These recordings are not yet available, and no more information has been provided on how they can be heard or accessed.
Despite this, the Dylan recordings look to be the first in a series of launches on the new format, with Burnett establishing a new firm, NeoFidelity, Inc., devoted to the format’s launch.
It will take a lot for Iconic Originals to replace vinyl’s resurgence in recent years. Vinyl sales reached their greatest point in three decades in 2021.
