Anna Meredith, a musician, composer, and producer, has unveiled ‘Bumps Per Minute,’ a new installation as part of her ‘DODGE’ project at Somerset House.
The project is a reworking of the classic fairground concept, in which dodgems make a collective sound based on bumps and hits against each other. A shift in BPM occurs with each bump and swerve of the dodgem.
With each movement, the BPM ranges from 62 to 200 thanks to specific tracking technology. The installation and subsequent album, titled ‘Bumps Per Minute: 18 Studies for Dodgems,’ was launched today, and it has 18 dodgems working together to create a unique experience.
The installation, created in collaboration with BAFTA-winning sound artist “Nick Ryan,” is shown every hour or so at ‘DODGE,’ Meredith’s bigger project at Somerset House.
The installation, which was sparked by the composer during the lockdown when he was pondering ideas for a “pandemic-friendly” performance, will be on display until August 22.
Meredith delivered a 20-track album under the same project name today, showcasing the installation in action. In addition, the composer has created a virtual game that may be accessed through the project’s microsite.
