Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream and Jehnny Beth of the Savages have announced their forthcoming collaboration album “Utopian Ashes.”
The duo has released the first single, “Remember We Were Lovers,” ahead of the album’s July 2nd launch on Third Man Records. The song and album are based on the breakup of a fictional couple’s marriage and are influenced by Gram Parsons’ country soul sound with George Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Tammy Wynette.
When the two singers performed at a Suicide tribute concert in Paris in 2015, the seeds of their partnership were planted. Primal Scream invited Beth to perform a cover of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s “Some Velvet Morning” on stage with them the next year. In 2017, Beth’s Savages cohort Johnny Hostile and Primal Scream’s Andrew Innes, Martin Duffy, and Darrin Mooney joined the singers in Paris for the recording sessions.
The pair gradually moved to the cosmic country after initial recording sessions delivered a sound similar to Savages and Primal Scream’s electronic stylings.
Utopian Ashes will be released on vinyl by Third Man shortly after the album’s July 2nd release date; preorder details will be released soon. In 2020, Beth released her solo debut, “To Love Is to Live.”
