After fans donated him money, Afrobeats musician Davido gave away 250 million Nigerian Naira ($608,000 or £450,000) to orphanages in Nigeria.
The musician recently asked fans to donate to a bank account he set up in his name if they believe “[he’s] given [them] a hit song.”
Davido stated on Saturday that the request was made in a “playful” manner, but that it exceeded his expectations.
He expressed gratitude to those who had contributed money and described how it would be put to good use by being donated to a worthy cause.
The sum provided to orphans includes fan donations and a personal commitment of N50 million.
Last week, his social media appeal received a mixed response. Some have criticized the musician for constantly flaunting his lavish lifestyle on Instagram, where he has 22 million followers.
In a tweet with laughing emojis, Davido declared his intention was to raise money to have his Rolls-Royce car passed from a port.
Over the course of a few days, he uploaded bank account details and screenshots as the balance in the account climbed.
In an online message, he stated that it is his intention to do this fundraising on his birthday every year as a way to give back.
Many admirers were grateful for his generosity, with others responding to his tweets and complimenting him for his kind deed.
Others chastised Davido for his charity donation, claiming that they had given him money to “flex” and were disappointed by his actions.
Davido is one of the most well-known musicians in Africa. He’s collaborated with international artists like Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, and he’s won MTV and BET music awards.
