Bachelor, the latest project of indie favorites Jay Som (Melina Duterte) and Palehound (Ellen Kempner), has unveiled a new track called “Sick of Spiraling” from their forthcoming debut album Doomin’ Sun, which will be released on May 28th through Polyvinyl.
Bachelor embraces a country twang on “Sick of Spiraling,” while Big Thief drummer James Krivchenia anchors the song with a dusty shuffle. Kempner spins a clever yet heartbreaking yarn about longing and life on the road in between spinning guitar lines that drift effortlessly between high-and-lonesome and blown-out-basement-show.
The lead riff from “Sick of Spiraling” had been sitting in Kempner’s voice memos for a while, though in a much slower and woozier form, according to Rolling Stone.
Kempner said the making of “Sick of Spiraling” was characterized by continuous laughter, just like the rest of the Doomin’ Sun recording process. She says Duterte insisted on handclaps in the chorus at first, but the idea was shelved when he realized it would have made the song sound just like Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
Following their debut track “Anything at All” and “Stay in the Car,” Bachelor’s third offering from Doomin’ Sun is “Sick of Spiraling.” Except for contributions from Krivchenia and Duterte’s partner and Routine bandmate Annie Truscott, Duterte and Kempner tracked the album over the course of two weeks last January, playing most of the instruments themselves.
